BOIL YOUR TAP WATER
Failure to follow this advisory could result in stomach or intestinal illness.
The Town of Stuart Waterworks, in conjunction with the Virginia Department of Health and the West Piedmont Health District – Patrick County Health Department, has issued a boil water advisory for customers in the service area south of Ashby Drive following a watermain break.
Who Is Affected
The portion of the water system south of Ashby Drive has been isolated for repairs. The affected area includes Wayside Drive and Patrick County High School. Customers in this area may experience low or no water pressure while repairs are underway.
What Happened
At approximately 10:30 a.m. on April 23, 2026, a watermain break occurred in connection with a construction project at Ashby Drive. Because of the loss of pressure, there is a possibility that E. coli may be present in the drinking water in the affected area.
E. coli are bacteria whose presence indicates that the water may be contaminated with human or animal wastes. Human pathogens in these wastes can cause short-term effects, such as diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches, or other symptoms. They may pose a greater health risk for infants, young children, the elderly, and people with severely-compromised immune systems.
What You Should Do
Do not drink tap water without boiling it first.
Use boiled or bottled water for drinking, beverage and food preparation, and making ice until further notice.
How to Boil
- Bring tap water to a rolling boil.
- Let it boil for one minute.
- Let it cool before using.
If You Cannot Boil Your Tap Water
Disinfect with recently-purchased, unscented liquid household bleach containing at least 5.25% hypochlorite. Add 8 drops (about ¼ teaspoon) per gallon of water, stir, and let stand for at least 30 minutes before use. Water purification tablets may also be used according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

What We’re Doing
Crews are currently repairing the broken water main at Ashby Drive. Once repairs are complete, we will chlorinate and flush the affected portion of the system and sample the water to confirm it is safe before lifting this advisory.
Expected resolution: by 4:00 p.m. today, April 23, 2026.
