BOIL WATER ADVISORY LIFTED
It is no longer necessary to boil your tap water before use.
As of September 30, 2026, the boil water advisory has been lifted for customers on South Main Street and Salem Highway (Route 8) south of the Dollar General, including Patrick County High School and Scenic Overlook, and customers on Wayside Road, Town of Stuart, Patrick County. The Town of Stuart Waterworks lifted the advisory with the concurrence of the Virginia Department of Health – Office of Drinking Water (VDH-ODW). Residents can safely resume using their household water as normal.
What Happened
The advisory was issued on September 26, 2026, after a planned service interruption and loss of water pressure while crews connected new water main for the Virginia Department of Transportation project at Route 8 and Ashby Drive. Bacteriological samples collected on September 28 and September 29, 2026 and analyzed by a state-certified laboratory were absent of both total coliform and E. coli bacteria.
Before You Resume Normal Use, Flush Your Plumbing
Water that sat in your pipes during the advisory should be flushed out. The Virginia Department of Health recommends these steps:
- Run your outside taps for about 10 minutes to bring fresh water from the water main to your property.
- If you have a cartridge filter treating the water coming into the house, replace the filter.
- If you have a water softener, run a regeneration (backwash) cycle.
- Run every cold-water faucet for one minute, starting with the faucet closest to where the water line enters the house, then the lower floor, then the upper floor.
- Clean the aerators (the screens) on your faucets.
- Run the hot water in a tub for 10 minutes to replace the water in your water heater.
The Town also recommends that you empty ice makers and throw away any ice made during the advisory, run dishwashers and washing machines through one empty cycle, and replace refrigerator, faucet and pitcher filters as the manufacturer directs.
Thank You
Thank you to our customers for your patience and cooperation while crews connected the new water main and the water was tested.
