Water will be off Saturday, September 26, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., for customers on South Main Street and Salem Highway (Route 8) south of the Dollar General, including Patrick County High School and Scenic Overlook, and for customers on Wayside Road. Ashby Drive and the streets off Ashby Drive are not affected.
The Town of Stuart Waterworks will interrupt water service while crews connect new water main installed as part of the Virginia Department of Transportation project on Route 8 at Ashby Drive.
Who Is Affected
Customers on South Main Street and Salem Highway (Route 8) south of the Dollar General, including Patrick County High School and Scenic Overlook, and customers on Wayside Road. If you live or work in this area, plan on having no water from 7:00 a.m. until service is restored, and on pressure that may fluctuate for a short time afterward. Ashby Drive and the streets off Ashby Drive are not affected and keep their service.
What To Do Before Saturday Morning
- Fill containers with enough water for drinking and cooking to last the day. A few gallons per person is sensible; more if you have pets or medical needs.
- Fill a bathtub or buckets if you will need water for flushing.
- Run dishwashers, washing machines and ice makers Friday evening rather than Saturday.
- If you depend on water for a medical device, dialysis at home, or a business that cannot operate without it, call the Town Office at (276) 694-3811 before Friday afternoon so we know you are there.
After the Water Comes Back On
The water may be cloudy at first; run your cold water tap until it runs clear. The Town will flush the lines and test the water in coordination with the Virginia Department of Health – Office of Drinking Water. If a boil water advisory is needed, it will be posted here, on the Town of Stuart Facebook page, and delivered in the affected area. Please store water ahead of time so that you are not caught short.
Why This Work Is Being Done
The existing water main in this location is being replaced as part of the road project. The Town is also replacing an old valve on Ashby Drive while the roadway is open and out of traffic, which avoids a separate closure later and removes an aging valve from the system. Doing both on one Saturday is the shortest interruption available.
